Wheel Thrown Pedestal Ceramics

Various Work - 2021

A series of wheel thrown ceramics constructed of two parts - a pedestal base and top. Each form was thrown separately then connected.

Carbon rich black clay was chosen to further pronounce the contours. Many of the pieces are unglazed to maintain a matte black finish and subtle grainy texture.

Process

Each form was thrown by hand on the potters wheel using a variety of tools to shape the clay. The bases and tops were then connected by "scoring and slipping" - a process commonly seen in ceramics. The surfaces were burnished prior to firing, creating a smooth finish.

Once dry, the pieces were bisque fired to become true "ceramic". They were then fired a final time up to 2165°F. Oxygen flow was essential to reveal the rich black coloration.
